What is anxiety?
Anxiety (or panic disorder) is a feeling of fear and worry. In normal situations, fears and worries are justified. Anxiety may occur without any relevant cause. Severe anxiety can lead to serious problems. Anxiety is accompanied by physical symptoms. These symptoms are generally related to heart, lungs and the nervous system.

What are the symptoms of anxiety?
The most common symptoms of anxiety are listed below:
  • Excessive tension
  • Irritability
  • Muscle tension
  • Sweating
  • Poor concentration
  • Trouble sleeping or staying asleep
  • Trembling
  • Headaches

    What causes anxiety?
    Anxiety is basically associated with the built-up of stress. Stress may occur due to various reasons. Some of the major stressors include: Death of the spouse, death of someone close, severe illness, divorce, financial difficulties, failure in exams, accidents…etc.

    Alternative remedies to beat anxiety

      Ayurvedic remedies:
    • Almond milk is recommended to beat anxiety. It can be made as follows:
      Soak 10 almonds in water. Keep it overnight. Peel off the skin the following day. Blend them in a mixer. Add this paste to a cup of warm milk. Add ginger, nutmeg and little saffron.
    • Relaxing bath: Add 1/3 cup of baking powder and 1/3 cup ginger to a tubful of water. Soak in it for 10 to 15 minutes.
      Home remedies:
    • Raw carrot juice can be taken 2 times a day.
    • Lettuce juice can be taken 2 to 3 times a day. (Both the above vegetables have good stress beating properties).
      Aromatherapy:
      The essential oils recommended to beat stress are as follows:
    • Lavender (It helps to ease anger, headache and insomnia)
    • Citrus (It is refreshing, relaxing and uplifting)
    • Jasmine (It promotes relaxation and boosts confidence)
      Herbal remedies:
    • Ashwagandha is a good tonic to beat stress. ½ teaspoon of tincture of Ashwagandha can be taken two times in a day.
    • Infusion of passionflower acts as a sedative. It soothes nervous tension and brings down stress. In a cup of boiling water, 1 teaspoon of herb can be used. This infusion is to be taken 3 to 4 times in a day.
    • Mullein tea is also recommended to reduce stress. Some amount of cinnamon or clove can be added to this tea to overcome its pungent odour.
      Vitamin therapy:
      Vitamin B complex helps people undergoing anxiety. The different available types of Vitamin B and their sources are listed below:
    • Sources of Thiamine: Brewer's yeast, wheat germ, oatmeal, whole wheat, bran, whole brown rice, black strap molasses, soybeans, and meats.
    • Sources of Vitamin B-2 Riboflavin: Cheese, milk, green vegetables and whole grains.
    • Sources of Vitamin B-3 Niacin: Fish and chicken
    • Sources of Vitamin B-6 Pyridoxine: Whole grains
    • Sources of Vitamin B-12: liver, kidney, meats, fish, dairy products and eggs
    • Sources of Biotin: Brewer's yeast and nuts
    • Sources of Pantothenic Acid: organ meats, brewer's yeast, egg yolk, whole grain cereal, chicken, bran, and nuts.
    • Sources of Folic acid: broccoli and spinach.
      Homeopathic remedies:
    • Argentum nitricum: When anxiety develops because of any big event like an exam, an important interview, a social gathering…etc, this remedy becomes helpful then. The person may experience dizziness and diarrhea.
    • Ignatia amara: An extremely sensitive person who may be anxious because of grief, loss, disappointment, criticism and loneliness may benefit from this remedy. A defensive attitude and mood swings are other symptoms. The patient may cry bitterly or burst out laughing. The patient often experiences terrible headaches and cramping pains in the abdomen or back.
      Hydrotherapy:
      A hot water bath with the temperature of the water maintained as 102 degree F is the best way to keep you cool and out of stress. This kind of hot water bath calms the body and calms the mind. It has an excellent and relaxing effect.
      Laughter therapy:
      This therapy is one of the most interesting and simplest ways to beat stress. Laughter reduces stress hormones, increases muscle flexion and boosts the immune system. Join a laughter club nearby.
      Reiki:
      Energy in our body becomes imbalanced or depleted due to stress. In such a situation the body needs extra energy. Reiki is a powerful hands-on healing technique in which this energy is drawn through the practitioner's body and then transferred to the client.
