What is Hiccup? Hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm, which occurs suddenly. When air enters into the lungs suddenly, the glottis closes. And, this creates a ‘hic’ sound.
What causes Hiccups? To understand what causes hiccups, it’s necessary to know how the diaphragm works. When we inhale, the diaphragm pulls down to allow the passage of air into the lungs and when we exhale it pushes up to allow air to pass out from the lungs. But, sometimes, the diaphragm does not function as normal. When it becomes irritated, it pushes up in a jerky way that makes the breath come out in a different way than the normal way. And, when such an irregular breath hits the voice box, hiccup is experienced.
