What is insomnia?
Insomnia refers to sleep disorders. If you are frequently experiencing sleepless nights, do not worry. Read all the information given below with a peaceful mind.

What are the symptoms of sleep disorders?
The symptoms of sleep disorders are as follows:
  • Difficulty in falling asleep
  • Being awake at night suddenly
  • Waking up too early in the morning
  • Unpleasant sleep

    What causes insomnia?
    The causes of insomnia are as follows:
  • Primary insomnia: This category includes causes such as environmental noise, extreme temperatures, stress, changes in the surrounding environment and side effects of medicines. Certain behavioral factors such as excessive use of drugs, alcohol or caffeine, chronic stress and working in shifts may also contribute to insomnia.
  • Secondary insomnia: This category includes some specific and more serious causes such as circadium rhythm disorder, restless legs syndrome, heart disease, asthma, parkinson's disease, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism...etc.

    Alternative remedies:
    Ayurvedic remedies:
    The following remedies are suggested to cure insomnia. Any one of the component listed below can be consumed, mixing it with milk or water, at least 3 times a day:

  • Amla
  • Brahmi (Bacopa Monrnera)
  • Vacha (Acorus Calamus)

    Aromatherapy:
    The following essential oils have wonderful effects and can induce good sleep:

  • Chamomile
  • Lavender
  • Jasmine
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Sandlewood
  • Rose

    Breath therapy:
    Breathing with ease makes everyone feel relaxed. It calms the body and promotes good sleep. The following exercise is known to have good effects and promotes sleep: Lie down on your back. Keep your eyes closed. Inhale deeply. This fills your lungs with good amount of air. Now exhale out air as much as possible. Repeat this breathing technique at least 3 times. By the end of this practice (i.e: The third time) try to hold your breath as much as possible.

    Diet therapy:
    A diet rich in carbohydrate (Example: cereals and crackers) with a glass of milk would be helpful. It is because food, which has low fat and protein content, stimulates the production of melatonin and serotonin (brain chemicals), which induce sleep.

    Herbal remedies:
    The following herbs have shown to have properties to induce sleep:

  • Valerian
  • Chamomile
  • Lemon
  • Ginseng

    Home remedies:
    Honey is a very useful in the treatment of insomnia. It should be taken with water, before going to bed, in doses of two teaspoons in a large cup of water.

    Homeopathic remedies:
    The following remedies have the power to induce sleep:

  • Nux vomica:
    This may be recommended for people who experience sleepless nights due to over-stress, alcohol or even due to disturbance of loud noise. The person may show symptoms such as waking up very early in the morning. The dosage differs from person to person.
  • Pulsatilla:
    This remedy is recommended for person’s who wake up very early in the morning and thus lack proper sleep. The person may be anxious due to unpleasant dreams and night sweats.
  • Opium:
    This remedy is recommended for person’s who feel sleepy and yet is unable to sleep. Even if the person sleeps, he/she may snore terribly.
  • Sepia:
    This remedy is recommended for person’s who are depressed by over-work and extreme mental stress. He/she may feel very sleepy at daytime. Also, headache, night sweats, nausea and dizziness may be the symptoms due to tiredness.

    Massage therapy:
    This is one of the simplest and yet very effective ways to induce sleep. Any oil such as coconut oil, sesame oil or mustard oil should be applied gently on the scalp and also on the soles just before retiring to bed.
