What is toothache?
Toothache is a pain which may be localized in or around a tooth.

What causes toothache?
The causes of toothache are as follows:
  • Cracked tooth: This may also be invisible and hence difficult to diagnose.
  • Dental decay
  • Fracture of the tooth
  • An exposed tooth root, which can occur if the gums recede or are damaged by over-vigorous brushing.
  • An abscess in the gum (lateral periodontal abscess)
  • Ulceration of the gums or soft tissues

    Alternative remedies:

    Ayurvedic remedies:
    The following ayurvedic supplements can help relieve toothache:

  • Dant Manjan Lal
  • Clove Oil
  • Irimedadi taila (oil)
  • Lavangadi bati

    Home remedies:

  • On the affected tooth, place 1 clove of garlic dipped in rock salt.
  • Place a piece of raw onion on the tooth.
  • Apply clove oil on the tooth.
  • Boil 5-6 cloves and 2- inch bark of a Margosa tree (Neem) in 1 cup of water. Strain and store this in the fridge. Smear this decoction on the affected tooth.

    Homeopathic remedies:
    Some of the common remedies suggested by the homeopaths to relieve toothache are as follows:

  • Pulsatilla: For unbearable pain, especially with hot food or drink, relieved by cold water, person not at all thirsty, feels better in open air c
  • Arnica: For pain after a filling or extraction .
  • Belladonna: Throbbing pain and dry mouth, developing gumboil.
  • Kreosotum: For teeth discoloured and decayed and bad breath.
    (However, the  dosage of the remedies differ from person to person depending upon the cause and the intensity of the pain.)

    Aromatherapy:
    The following essential oils have good effects at times of toothache:

  • Clove
  • Tea Tree
  • Myrrh
  • Chamomile
  • Peppermint

    Vitamin therapy:
    Take calcium and magnesium supplements at the onset of any kind of toothache. It has a soothing effect on the nerves of the teeth.
